Who are Europe’s top marksmen 2022-23?

International break… (and breathe!). Like we haven’t had enough fixes of international football during this season, from last years World Cup. Seen as it’s international break, I thought it would be a great time to take stock of the killers, the strikers, the bagsmen of this world.

This piece is just going to shine light on the highest goal scorers in club football this season (in the top European leagues in the world) as of 25th March 2023

10th on the list is England and Spurs’ all time leading scorer. Harry Flames has been great form this season, even in a very average Spurs team. If not for one other forward (who appears later on this list!) Harry’s 21 goals in 28 games in the league, should deserve far more praise. The England captain reached a trademark 200 premier league goals this season and done in 304 games and has done it faster than the two guys immediately above him in the all time scoring stats; Wazza (462 games) and Shearer (306 games). Even with his amazing goal scoring, there are questions over the fact he is still trophyless. Could this be his final season at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium?

Am I the only one thinks that Ben Yedder’s career just has not met the potential it should have. Saying that his goal scoring isn’t too shabby. For Sevilla, he scored more than 1 in 2 games (70 goals in 138 games) and since he’s been at Monaco, he’s goal involvement is 126 in 159 appearances, which is amazing.

Ben Yedder has scored 23 goals this season and is sitting 4th on the goal scorers list in Ligue 1, aiming to help Monaco push towards that final Champions League spot.

Yes. You aren’t seeing a typo. I had to blink twice as well. Seems like our man here has turned himself into a bit of a bagsman in Portugal. Ex West Ham reject, Mario has scored 23 goals in all competitions (by far his career best) and has been instrumental in leading Benfica 10 points clear in the Primeira Liga (Top scorer in the league) and has chipped in with 6 goals in this years Champions League (Sitting 4th, only behind the likes of Haaland, Salah and Mbappe).

One of the most exciting young talents in world football right now. The man who benched Ronaldo at the world Cup and even chipped in with a hat-trick, has had a breakthrough season scoring 24 goals in all competitions. Putting this into context, Darwin Nunez scored 34 goals in 41 games last season, whilst Ramos is only 10 behind this tally with 9 games left in the league, as well as still competing in the quarter finals of the Champions League.

The masked Nigerian assassin has been in scintillating form this season, smashing 21 goals in 23 Serie A games this season. The forward is clear on the top scorer’s chart by 7 goals and alongside side Kvaratskhelia; the dynamic duo are on course to shooting the Gli Azzurri to their first Scudetto since the 1989/90 season. It will be hard for Napoli to keep a hold of Osimhen at the end of the season, with the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea on red alert.

Lewan‘goal’ski.. even in in the Spanish borders. Nothing is slowing down this young man. His 15 goals in the league (league’s top scorer) has catapulted Barca into pole position to win their 27th La Liga title.

An MP that actually follows the rules! Rashford has re-found scintillating form after the world cup. The forward has registered a remarkable 19 goals in the 24 games after the World Cup, including scoring in 9 consecutive games at Old Trafford. This has been his best return since Ole was at the wheel and doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon.

Yes, you are reading right. Enner Valencia, former West Ham and Everton reject. The forward’s redemption arc is well and truly in full flow.  Before we get to his domestic form- Mr Valencia has actually scored a remarkable 6 goals in 6 games in the last two world cups for Ecuador.

His goalscoring doesn’t only stop nationally; domestically he has scored 29 goals in all competitions, and has scored 25 goals in 21 games in the Turkish league- making him top scorer in the league (10 goals ahead of.. wait for it… Fabio Borini in second place)

‘Project Mbappe’… almost every child born to a football loving family has ambitions to train their child to be at least a quarter as good as this mercurial talent. The newly crowned Les Blues captain carried his national team to last year’s World Cup final, finishing top scorer and even scoring a hat-trick in the final. His form domestically hasn’t been too shabby either. 19 goals in 24 Ligue 1 games has put him joint top scorer in the league (alongside Jonathan David – Lille), even with a few games out injured.

‘Haaland won’t hack it in the prem’… ‘Haaland makes the City team worse’…  Haaland scores his 8th goal in 2 games’!! What can be said about this man, not only has he already scored over 40 goals already before April- he has broken many records on the way, including but not limited to:

  • Fastest player to reach 10 premier league goals (6 games)
  • 1st Man City player to score on both premier league and Champions league debut
  • Fastest player to score 4 premier league hat-tricks
  • Fastest player to score 25 Prem goals
  • Only the 3rd player in history to have scored 5 goals in a single Champions league match

And the list goes on!

Haaland’s goal scoring exploits are to be admired and it’s inevitable that he’ll smash Mo Salah’s (32 goals in the 38-game format) record and even Andy Cole and Alan Shearer’s 34 goals a season record (in the old 42-game season format). Can he bring home the Champions League?
